Convitto della Calza, Oltrarno Meeting Center
The “Calza” originated in the 14th century as Saint John the Baptist Hospital and takes its name from the Jesuate Brothers who first lived there in 1529. They used to wear a strip of cloth on their left shoulder that resembled a stocking and so,the building became known as the “Calza”,or Stocking.
From the time of its founding till today the various religious orders have enriched it with majestically beautiful art works, such as the 15th century cloister, the Last Supper fresco by Franciabigio (1514) and the Cardinal Mistrangelo Chapel.
The Convitto della Calza, today the Oltrarno Meeting Center, with its splendid 14th century backdrop, offers a fascinating professional venue for prestigious events that is unique in Florence. For your meetings and conventions, product launches, press conferences and seminars, our Meeting Center offers you a total of seven halls or rooms which may accommodate from 20 to 400 persons, together with a showcase for receptions, fashion show and exhibitions in which the very special atmosphere of a 14th century cloister goes hand in hand with the ease and reliability of the latest in modern technology.
The 7 meeting rooms of the hotel conference center, equipped with most modern technology and which can accommodate from 20 to 400 persons in addition to restaurant service and its famous catering make the Hotel Convitto della Calza, the perfect Florence hotel for meetings in the heart of the city.
All meeting rooms are equipped with optic fiber 50Mbps IT service which remains available to all participants for the whole meeting duration.
At the entrance to Florence, in the characteristic quarter of Oltrarno very close to the Boboli Garden, Pitti Palace and the Ponte Vecchio, the Hotel Convitto della Calza with its prestigious conference center, is located in a truly strategic position: easily reached from both the tollway and the Santa Maria Novella train station.
Its position is strategic: in the hearth of one of the most characteristic areas of the historical center, the Oltrarno, or “Left Bank” of the River Arno, the quarter that, thanks to its position out of the way of tourist traffic, has remained unchanged.
From the Santa Maria Novella train station (which is also the terminal for the Florence Airport shuttle) it takes only a few minutes by bus ,while groups arriving to Florence by motor coach will find a comfortable area for loading and unloading right in front of the hotel.
There are also authentic masterpieces here (less than a fifteen minute walk from the Convitto della Calza): The Church of the Santo Spirito facing the characteristic piazza of the same name, the work of Brunelleschi, is one of the most beautiful and important of the city and the Renaissance; as are the frescoes of Masaccio in the Brancacci Chapel of the Church of the Carmine, also 10 minutes by foot from the hotel. Also not to be missed, the Deposition of Pontormo, a masterpiece of Mannerism, in the Church of Santa Felicita, very near the Ponte Vecchio. At Via Romana no. 17 (8 minutes on foot from the Convitto della Calza conference center) there’s the La Specola Museum, the ancient Imperial Royal Museum of Physics and Natural History of Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena (1775) that houses interesting and curious collections of natural objects and wax models.
